A Magical Sanctuary


We walked off a street that looked like any other Scottsdale neighborhood to an unassuming door. The girls wore sweeping dresses, the kind that make you feel like you're stepping into a story as the main character. They gathered up their skirts, pushed the door open, and we all stood still.


We gasped.


On the other side was a path lined with statuary, the kind you would normally only see in a museum. The girls moved forward, eager to see what lay beyond the trees. Then they ran.


"What's that up ahead?"


They could hear birds calling, the rush of flowing water, and the unmistakable pull of an adventure far beyond what any of us expected. I told them to wander while I set down my gear and got my bearings. Here, in the middle of Scottsdale, was a place meant to hold dreams, quiet reflection, and growth. A place where one path led to a hidden nest of eggs and another to a weathered deity draped in climbing vines. It wasn't just a sanctuary. It felt like a place suspended outside of time.


I gathered the girls, and we explored one hidden corner after another. Somewhere along the way they lost their flower crowns. Their shoes came off. Toes found cool, flowing water. Hands brushed through crisp leaves. Their spirits urged them to twirl, spin, and simply be. There were moments when the beauty of the gardens and the life quietly unfolding all around us felt almost overwhelming. It was the kind of place that makes you slow down long enough to remember how rarely we do.


Serenity Gardens isn't simply another portrait location. It's a respite from modern life, from the constant noise, the endless obligations, and the quiet ways we drift away from ourselves. It's a place to remember who you are.


And perhaps, for a little while, dream about who you still want to become.

The experience touched me deeply. Watching the girls settle into this place and forget that I was walking beside them with a camera was one of my favorite parts of the day. They became absorbed in the owls, the peacocks, balancing on the stepping stones, and lingering in the places that called to them.


This is how my favorite portraits happen. Not because I direct every moment, but because I watch the movements that naturally unfold and pause them for just a moment. This magical place invites people to leave behind their worries and simply become themselves.
